21-year-old midfielder is named to a Dominican Republic National Team squad that will participate in the Second Round of CONCACAF Qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2025 Gold Cup.

Las Vegas Lights FC today announced that midfielder Edison Azcona has received a call-up to the Dominican Republic National Team.
The Dominican Republic will face Guatemala on June 6 at the Doroteo Guamuch Flores Stadium in Guatemala City, Guatemala, and Dominica on June 10 at the Felix Sanchez Olympic Stadium in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic for the Second Round of Concacaf Qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Heading into the final two games of the Second Round, Azcona and the DR currently sit in third place in Group E on three points behind Guatemala and Jamaica, both on six points. Dominica and British Virgin Islands sit in fourth and fifth place, respectively, on zero points. The top two teams advance to the Third Round.
They will then travel to the USA, where they will face Mexico on June 14 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, California for their Gold Cup debut. The two following group stage matches, on June 18 vs Costa Rica and on June 22 vs Suriname, will be held at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
The 21-year-old midfielder has been named to a roster that aims to make history for Dominican soccer this summer. “Los Quisqueyanos” will first play for an opportunity to qualify for the Third Round of the Concacaf World Cup Qualifiers, which would put them only a few games away from a historic FIFA World Cup qualification. Then, they will make their first-ever appearance in the Gold Cup, the confederation’s premier national team competition.
Born in La Romana, Azcona, who can be deployed as an attacking midfielder or a winger, has 13 caps for the Dominican Republic Senior National Team, giving out four assists across friendlies and Concacaf Nations League matches.
He has also been a key player for the Dominican Republic youth national teams, scoring the nation’s first-ever goal in a World Cup at the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Argentina and leading the squad that would participate in the men’s soccer tournament at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics. In Paris, Azcona wore the captain’s armband and gave out one assist against future gold medal winners Spain.
Azcona has made 10 appearances for the Lights this season, scoring one goal in the U.S. Open Cup against Chattanooga Red Wolves SC.
