It’s time to up the ante.
The Lights head to the Golden State to face Orange County SC in a critical intra-conference showdown. Winning is a must if Vegas wants to stay close to the playoff-clinching positions in the Western Conference table.
The Lights are going through a rough patch at the moment. After a seven-match unbeaten run, the team has been unable to win in their last three games, losing all three and only scoring once.
The club’s last match against New Mexico was a close one. The Lights took the lead through Oalex Anderson in the first half but were unable to maintain it against an aggressive Albuquerque side that came back to snatch three points from Cashman (1-2).
As for Orange County, things haven’t been going tremendously well. After a hot start to the season, the Californian side has been incapable of earning three points in their last five outings, losing three games and drawing two.
In their latest match, Orange County drew 1-1 at home against Sacramento Republic FC. Chris Hegardt scored the County’s only goal of the evening.
Nobody’s comfortable in the Western Conference standings. Orange County currently stands third, but they’re two defeats away from potentially losing their playoff berth. The Lights are tenth, and a defeat could sink the team further into the depths of the West… but a victory would mean jumping back into playoff contention.
Nothing is written in stone. Every game is a final now. Playoffs are at stake.
Third time’s a charm?
This upcoming match will mark the third time Saturday evening’s rivals face each other this season.
On March 7, Orange County and the Lights divided honors at Championship Soccer Stadium as both teams opened the 2026 USL Championship season. Lyam MacKinnon scored for the home team halfway through the first half, but Nighte Pickering managed to bag a goal at the death to earn the Lights their first point of the year.
Orange County returned the visit on June 20, earning three points at Cashman Field following a 3-2 victory. Oalex Anderson and Johnny Rodriguez scored for the Lights, while Lyam MacKinnon, Yaniv Bazini, and Garrison Tubbs converted for the away side. Yes, MacKinnon likes playing against the Lights for some reason.
Will the Lights finally win against Orange County this season? They say third time’s a charm.

Here are the keys to three vital points in (hopefully) sunny California.
Championship Soccer Stadium: A Factor?
Orange County is the best away team in the Western Conference with 21 points collected after 12 matches on the road.
And yet at home, the County has struggled. They’ve only earned 15 points in 11 games at the “Champ” for a 1.36 points per match record. That’s the second worst record in the Western Conference after Oakland Roots.
While the reasons behind this somewhat poor performance at home are hard to pinpoint, the reality is that the Lights must take advantage of this rather unfavorable situation for the OC to seize three points from the Championship Soccer Stadium.
Oalex Anderson: A Different Player
Oalex Anderson has been a difference maker for the Lights throughout the season, but his impact and output during the last ten matches has been just outstanding.
Anderson has led the team in goal contributions in that stretch of games with six, scoring five times and assisting once.
Now playing in a more centralized role alongside Johnny Rodriguez, the Vincentian striker has become the linchpin of the team’s attack, finding himself at the receiving end of most of the team’s offensive sequences.
If Oalex continues performing at this level, it wouldn’t be surprising if he becomes a key factor in the Lights’ raid of Championship Soccer Stadium.
Defensive Resilience
The Lights have lost their last three matches conceding an average of two goals per 90. After a seven-match unbeaten streak where the team only allowed five, the team’s defense seems to be unraveling at the worst time possible.
However, the club has taken some measures to address this unfavorable situation. Alongside player rotations on the defensive line, the Lights have signed Puerto Rican center back Callum Stretch.
Stretch, who has a wealth of experience at the college soccer and USL League One levels, is a physical center back who participates actively in the buildup phase of the game to push his teams forward. His addition to the squad will provide Head Coach Devin Rensing with a wealth of options at the center back position.
If the Lights can keep a tight defense in California, then the odds of three points in California will swiftly move in Vegas’ favor.
