Third time’s a charm?
This Wednesday, the Lights will face Oakland Roots at Cashman Field in a key match as both teams ramp up their game in the pursuit of playoff berths.
The Lights are on a four-match unbeaten streak after three wins and one draw in all competitions. In their last match, Vegas drew 1-1 to Phoenix Rising in a close, intense matchup at Cashman Field.
Meanwhile, Oakland have not won in their last five matches across all competitions, accumulating five defeats and 11 goals allowed. Their last victory took place on June 20, when they defeated Phoenix Rising FC 4-3 at Phoenix Rising Stadium.
In their last match, the Roots lost 1-0 to defending USL Championship champions Pittsburgh Riverhounds at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.
Como Here Often?
This Wednesday’s showdown will mark the third time Vegas and Oakland face each other this season.
The last two matches ended in Oakland’s favor.
On April 22, the Roots defeated the Lights 4-2 at the Coliseum, with 2025 USL Championship Golden Boot winner Peter Wilson bagging a hat-trick. Vincentian forward Oalex Anderson scored his first goal for the Lights on that night.
On June 6, Oakland came to Vegas for some Prinx Tires USL Cup action. The Roots earned three points following a 2-0 victory, with Jesus de Vicente and Tucker Lepley scoring for the visiting side.
The Lights’ last win over Oakland took place on March 20, 2024. Vegas won 3-0 with goals courtesy of Coleman Gannon, Gaoussou Samake, and Valentin Noël. From that point onward, the Roots haven’t lost to the Lights in five matches.
It’s been a while, and the stakes have never been higher.
It’s going to be a great game.
Keys to the Match
Here are the keys to a first win against Oakland this season.
Beware of Wolfgang Prentice
Few players on the Oakland roster are as dangerous as Wolfgang Prentice.
The team’s second-best goalscorer (5) and assists leader (6), Prentice has been directly involved in 44% of Oakland’s goals this season.
Prentice is third when it comes to chances created (16), leading the pack in big chances created (9). He’s dangerous in the box, and a risk factor outside of it.
The Lights must contain Prentice and his creative efforts if they are to earn three points at Cashman.
Peter Wilson… again
Peter Wilson won the USL Championship golden boot back in 2025 after scoring 18 goals.
This season, Wilson has scored ten in 16 matches. One every 139 minutes.
He’s still the same deadly striker. The Lights must make him uncomfortable.
It’s Johnny Time
There’s nothing better for a striker than to face his former team.
Johnny Rodriguez has faced Oakland three times since leaving the organization in early 2025, scoring twice and assisting once. Three goal contributions in three matches. Deadly.
Rodriguez, who’s on an incredible run of form after making 11 goal contributions in 17 appearances this year, is ready to make an impact against his first club and take the Lights to victory.
