A big week for Las Vegas Lights FC goalkeeper Ricardo Ferriño already included a 7-save shutout performance in a win Saturday night and his 27th birthday.
Now, the icing on the birthday cake comes in the form of United Soccer League Team of the Week honors, the league announced Tuesday afternoon.
For the club, it is the fifth individual Team of the Week honor earned during the 2018 season. It is the first for Ferriño, who following Saturday’s match now ranks sixth in the 33-team league with 61 goalkeeper saves this season.
Saturday night, Lights FC won its fourth straight home match, knocking off Rio Grande Valley FC Toros, 1-0. The game-winning goal didn’t come for the hosts until the 82nd minute, when Joel Huiqui banged in a header off a corner kick by Omar Salgado.
Up until that point, Ferriño was a big reason why Lights FC was able to keep things level at Cashman Field.
Ferriño’s two biggest saves of the night came sandwiched right around the halftime break.
First, just before the half, an up close header chance by RGVFC forced Ferriño to the ground, where he deflected the upward moving ball over the crossbar, even earning praise from his opponents for the effort.
Then, in the opening minutes of the second half, he soared to his right to knock away a laser of a free kick attempt from straight on.
Ferriño & Co. gained some ground in the chase for a Western Conference playoff berth with the win, and now look to keep momentum building during a busy August. Saturday at 5:30 p.m., Lights FC (7-9-5, 26 points) will hit the road and look for a season sweep of Saint Louis FC (7-6-8, 29 points). Lights FC won the first meeting between the two at Cashman Field on July 7, 1-0.
While the team is away, Carlos Alvarez & fellow Lights FC non-traveling players, plus Cash the Soccer Rocker, will host a free poolside watch party for Saturday’s match at Plaza Hotel & Casino.
Saturday’s watch party begins at 5 p.m., and the night will feature signature cocktails from Jameson, Absolut and Malibu, plus a photo booth, putting green and bingo, featuring Lights FC prizes for the winners.
Following Saturday night’s event in DTLV, the final two installments on the “Saturday Night Lights” slate will be upcoming home matches on Aug. 18 and Aug. 25.
August 18, will be UFC Night at Cashman Field, with UFC legend Forrest Griffin, plus current fighters Joe Benavidez and Claudia Gedalha on hand at the match and interacting with fans at the Zappos pregame tailgate party.
