LAS VEGAS’ STADIUM
Since its original wooden structure was built in the 1940s, Cashman Field has served Las Vegas as a rodeo ground for the old Helldorado Days, a concert venue, a wrestling arena, an MLB exhibition site, and for 35 years the home of Triple-A baseball — the Stars, then the 51s, the same franchise now known as the Aviators — before becoming, since 2018, the home of USL professional soccer. Few venues have shaped the city’s sporting and cultural life so consistently.
Cashman Field’s Own History
Before it was the Lights’ stadium, it was Las Vegas’s stadium — nearly 80 years of it.
The Original Cashman Field Opens
A wooden ballpark is built on Las Vegas Boulevard in 1947, hosting its first baseball game in May 1948, along with the Las Vegas Wranglers, the Helldorado rodeo, and even a 1955 world heavyweight title fight.
The Lights Go Dark
The aging ballpark falls out of use as interest fades, leaving the site dormant for nearly a decade.
A New Stadium Rises
A $26 million rebuild opens on the same downtown site with an MLB exhibition between the Padres and Mariners, becoming the long-time home of Triple-A baseball in Las Vegas.
Record Crowds & A World Series
Cashman sets its all-time attendance record with over 15,000 fans for a White Sox–Cubs exhibition, and later hosts the Triple-A World Series.
Soccer Arrives
Las Vegas Lights FC plays its first regular-season home match on March 24, 2018, sharing the venue with baseball for one season as the grass pitch is laid over the infield match by match.
New Ownership Under Bautista + Premium Deck Addition
MLB legend José Bautista acquires the Lights in 2024. A new Premium Deck is installed ahead of the season along with other infrastructure upgrades, further reinventing Cashman as a soccer-specific stadium during its final era.
Curtain Call
The Las Vegas Lights’ final era at Cashman Field wraps up as they make another playoff push and look to climb the USL ladder, closing a story that runs back to 1947, longer than almost any stadium story in the city.
